PRIME Program hosts intensive two day seminar for advanced undergraduate students
The PRIME Program deadline is fast approaching. Funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and administered by the American Psychological Association, the PRIME program is designed to "develop minority research talent in psychology."  Specifically, undergraduate minority students (Black, Hispanic, Asian-Pacific Islander, and Native American) will be provided research experience and mentorship in order to prepare for graduate school in psychology and to enter careers in the scientific study of psychology.

This year the PRIME program format will be an intensive two day seminar. This will allow students to spend more time conducting research while still gaining the practical knowledge about graduate school. Participation in this seminar is a must for students applying to graduate school. By the end of the seminar participants will be able to identify appropriate graduate psychology programs, secure letters of recommendation, design a study strategy for the GRE , prepare for interviews, and gain mentored experience in a research lab.

This seminar will be held over a two day period on the FIU University Park Campus. Sessions will begin at 8:30am and continue through to 5:00pm on Monday June 22 and Tuesday June 23, 2009. For more information about the PRIME program or to down load an application visit the PRIME website.

Careers & Research Conference for Undergraduates was a success!

The Department of Psychology and FIU Career Services hosted the second annual Psychology Careers and Research Conference. This event was held on Thursday October 23rd in the University Park Graham Center Ballroom.

All psychology major, minors and intended majors that attend this important all day event reported being very happy with the information provided. Those students planning to start their career upon graduation had to opportunity to identify what career resources are available to them, access additional resume building knowledge and connect with potential employers that traditionally hire students in from the field of psychology during the morning session. For those that were thinking about going on to graduate school, the afternoon sessioncovered the necessary key areas for preparation, application development and general graduate school planning.

Congratulations goes to Ms. Andrea Green, Director of the Department of Psychology Academic Advising Center, and all the department support staff for this success. They were the wheels behind the machine that made sure everything ran smoothly for the students.

Dr. Leslie Frazier new President of the FIU Chapter of the United Faculty of Florida

Dr. Leslie Frazier has been elected to the position of President for the FIU Chapter of the United Faculty of Florida (UFF). An Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, Dr. Frazier’s research focuses on health and aging. However, she has always made being an active member of the department and university community a priority.

Dr. Frazier is coming into the position at a particularly critical time in the university's history given the impending cuts to resources and education budgets statewide. She explains: “We are facing one of the most difficult times in the history of FIU, the UFF will play a crucial role in the managing the process of economic reorganization and I am excited to be part of that process. I encourage all faculty to learn about the benefits of union membership and to take a look at our collectively bargained contract -- it is something that we all should be proud of as we are on the cutting edge on issues such as domestic partner benefits and paid parental leave for both parents among other issues.”
