Prospective Graduate Students

Rigorous, scientific training is the foundation of the Florida International Graduate Psychology program. Our success in producing quality research is, in part, rooted in our ability to attract interesting, innovative, and extremely successful graduate students. Our graduate programs, particularly at the doctoral level, pull together around significant themes and their success has helped to sustain and meet the extraordinary challenges that we have faced over the past few years.

Students seeking more information about the Department of Psychology’s graduate programs should contact the Director for the Masters Program or Doctoral Program area they are most interested in entering. For application information, please contact the Department of Psychology Graduate Program.

Students interested in applying to our graduate programs must meet the requirements of and submit an application to both the Department of Psychology Graduate Admissions Committee and the Florida International University Graduate School. All applicants must submit their materials prior to the academic year in which they are seeking admission.

 

Department of Psychology Graduate Admission Requirements

The following materials must be submitted to the Graduate Studies Admissions Committee in the Department of Psychology by both MS and Ph.D. candidates. Materials must be received by December 15th.

  1. Curriculm vitae or resume; should pertinent information on previous experience, education, honors, awards, interests, community service and achievements
  2. A statement of intent, including a discussion of educational and career objectives, and the relationship of the MS or Ph.D. degree to the achievement of those objectives. Statements should not exceed three typewritten, double- spaced pages
  3. Three letters of recommendation from persons who are in a position to evaluate the applicant's previous professional, academic, and personal performance, and her/his potential for success in a graduate program. Forms are not available from the Department. Letters should be written on letterhead or stationery.
  4. Two different writing samples- academic or work related (Ph.D. applicants only)
  5. Complete Department of Psychology Supplemental Application Form after completing Florida International University Graduate School Application (see below).

All application materials and supporting documentation must be received in the Department of Psychology by December 15th for admission. Your file will not be reviewed until all materials have been received. Applications completed after the date will be held over for the following year. Late applicants cannot be guaranteed consideration. Admission to the graduate programs is only for the Fall semester. Completed Application Materials should be sent to:

Florida International University Graduate Admission Requirements

The following are the University’s Graduate Admission Requirements:

  1. Online Graduate Application (your application to the Department will not be reviewed until this has been completed)
  2. Certified/ Official transcripts of all college level work
  3. A 3.0 or higher GPA during the last two years as an upper division student for both the Master’s and Doctoral programs.
  4. A total score (quantitative plus verbal) of 1,000 or higher on the GRE for the Master’s degree. A 3.5 or higher GPA and a GRE verbal and quantitative of 1120 or higher are required for the Ph.D. degree.
  5. International graduate student applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a score for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A total score of 92 on the TOEFL (equivalent to 580 in the TOEFL) is required.
